[1. Barton is standing out on the curb near the mail box. She's wary when she gets a package with her name on it - there's a lot of things she doesn't want back. But there's a small box with something obviously tangible in it, and the things she's trying to avoid are most definitely intangible. Risking it, she opens it up to find her trust old military surplus trench coat (sort of like the one seen here.). She holds it up, looking over the worn and tattered coat fondly. To anyone who knows this sort of thing, it's from World War I. It could definitely use a wash and some repairs, and it's way too hot to be wearing it, but Barton doesn't care. She throws it on. It's too big for her, needing the sleeves rolled up, and it almost reaches her ankles. But now she feels a little more like herself again.

2. Later on, she'll be sans coat, working in the yard, with lots of tools and supplies. She manages to gather up enough wood and paint, and is building what is looking to be a dog house. There's a sketch near by with some measurements and needed supplies listed on it nearby. She works diligently, and seems to really know what she's doing. She seems to be enjoying herself too, in her usual understated way though.

3. Open phone call, usual drone filter:]

Hey. Um. So, the town made me admit to that whole communism thing, right? What was the point to that, anyway. [No mention of all the other info she blabbed about. Nope.]

Oh, right. I heard somethin' about a body at the pool, too. What's that about?

I think something happened that the people running the town weren't counting on. Communist witch hunts were an era appropriate way of covering it up.

But it's another person in charge of this town, right? Makes ya wonder what'll happen if they keep killin' each other off. Ya think they'll be replaced?

If they served a purpose Lucy needed served, they'll most likely have to be.

That means one of us could end up droned and actin' like the new police chief. Or maybe one of the guys who're already cops.

[A pause, as Sarah Jane considers that the Doctor is a police officer here]

It's... not outside the realm of possibility. If Grady really was just there because Lucy needed a police chief.

Hmm. That ain't just it though, I bet. At least what I heard from people in town. Never saw him do much of anything, myself.

From: [identity profile] after-thesky.livejournal.com
When he was following the script he wouldn't need to, would he? Since the drones insist there's no crime here anyway.

I suppose the question is whether he and Lucy were here before the rest of us.

From: [identity profile] nosoul-nomind.livejournal.com
I'm sure they were. But couldn't Grady drone people? Who else does it then? Lucy, the Mayor?

Date: 2011-07-24 03:58 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] after-thesky.livejournal.com
Grady's the only one we've ever seen do it. It's hard to say who does it when it happens of its own accord.

From: [identity profile] nosoul-nomind.livejournal.com
Yeah. I mean, he can't be everywhere, right? People get droned all the time.

Sometimes it almost seems like the town itself has a will.

Date: 2011-07-25 03:41 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nosoul-nomind.livejournal.com
Yeah, like it's alive. Makes me wonder how much they actually see us do 'round here. Gives me the damn creeps.

From: [identity profile] flameyedhunter.livejournal.com
I dunno, actually, I haven't been at the pool since the party.

hmm... as for the communism thing I think that was just one of the town's tricks.

Date: 2011-07-22 04:01 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nosoul-nomind.livejournal.com
Me neither.

But no one believed it for a minute. Seems kinda like a pointless trick.

Date: 2011-07-22 04:41 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] flameyedhunter.livejournal.com
Well, I don't really know what the people in charge were planning by doing it.

And honestly, I don't really want to ask them. They're generally pretty awful to deal with.

From: [identity profile] nosoul-nomind.livejournal.com
I doubt they'd just spill out all the answers to us anyway. Never worked before, ain't gonna work now.

Sometimes you can learn a little something that way though.

From: [identity profile] nosoul-nomind.livejournal.com
I guess, if they try to avoid questions or somethin'. I dunno. I'm probably too direct to be the one asking.

From: [identity profile] flameyedhunter.livejournal.com
Nothing wrong with being direct! It works for me.

[[He's going to stop as he was walking by.

Watching her work a moment he smiles.]]

Want any help?

Date: 2011-07-22 04:23 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nosoul-nomind.livejournal.com
Oh. Uh. This kinda stuff ain't too hard. Though I guess I can use an extra set of hands for a second.

Date: 2011-07-22 06:26 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] pants-yourmove.livejournal.com
It isn't but it's beyond some people in town. It's not that they are dumb, it's just that they have really weird concepts on how things work.

[[He'll come over. He hasn't had any projects lately.]]

Just let me know what part you want me to start on.

Date: 2011-07-22 09:04 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nosoul-nomind.livejournal.com
Didn't think anyone else in town'd be interested in stuff like this. But if someone in town can't figure out how a damn doghouse works, I feel sorry for 'em. Pretty easy thing to build.

Those planks over there need to be cut, if you think you can do that. I already have 'em marked, just cut along the line.

[There's a sawhorse with the planks and saw on it. No power tools, we do things the old fashioned way with Barton.]

From: [identity profile] pants-yourmove.livejournal.com
[[Easy enough, saves him the extra time. He has gotten used to the "old fashion way" around here. Going to work on them.]]

Imagine if you spent your entire life in a world where you didn't have to nail, saw or construct something like this from scratch. I'm sure the common sense stuff to us would be hard.

I keep trying to think that way. How things must work in their worlds and how to deal with things here.

Date: 2011-07-24 02:33 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nosoul-nomind.livejournal.com
I guess. I can see someone maybe never doing it before, but not bein' completely unfamiliar to it. I mean, stuff's gotta get built somehow.

Date: 2011-07-24 04:21 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] pants-yourmove.livejournal.com
Maybe, maybe it just builds itself.

You see Lucas's walking table?

Date: 2011-07-24 11:40 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nosoul-nomind.livejournal.com
Lucas... [Oh right, she met him.] Wait, a walking table? How does that work?

Date: 2011-07-25 03:08 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] pants-yourmove.livejournal.com
I don't know, the legs just bends funny like real legs do.

See what I mean though? Lucas seems to see it as normal.

Date: 2011-07-25 03:43 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nosoul-nomind.livejournal.com
Huh. I guess. Guess it's good I at least know how things work around here.

Well. Kinda. Still learnin' a lot of this stuff.

Date: 2011-07-25 04:01 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] pants-yourmove.livejournal.com
Yeah, also the town doesn't always make sense.

I like doing these things because at least they seem normal.

Date: 2011-07-25 11:48 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nosoul-nomind.livejournal.com
'S all I know how to do, really. Of course, the town won't let me do it for a living so I gotta do it on my own.

Date: 2011-07-26 11:12 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] pants-yourmove.livejournal.com
Yeah, I used to work on cars back home and they have me stuck at the bowling alley because I'm not technically 18.

Date: 2011-07-26 01:20 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nosoul-nomind.livejournal.com
I know they won't let me do it cuz I'm a girl, but have ya tried switchin' jobs?

Date: 2011-07-26 05:13 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] pants-yourmove.livejournal.com
Yeah, but it's a job "for adults".

I'd like to just quit and do some stuff on my own time but I guess the money is useful too.

Date: 2011-07-29 02:28 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nosoul-nomind.livejournal.com
I'm an adult, but ya can't tell them that. Won't listen, of course.

They gave me a job, kinda. It's volunteer so I don't get paid. Talk about BS.

Date: 2011-08-01 09:03 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] pants-yourmove.livejournal.com
That sucks. At least I get paid at mine.

Also, it could be worse, you could be stuck as a kid. I'm supposed to be 18, but all the drone records have me at 17... again.

Date: 2011-08-02 12:06 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nosoul-nomind.livejournal.com
[She looks at him very flatly.] I am "stuck as a kid". I'm a lot older than I look.

Date: 2011-08-03 12:55 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] pants-yourmove.livejournal.com
Really? You mean, like back home?

Wow... I don't know how'd I deal with that.

Date: 2011-08-03 01:10 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nosoul-nomind.livejournal.com
My situation back home's pretty weird. And shitty. But here, I'm just some kid. But even I gotta admit it's better than where I was.

Date: 2011-08-03 01:18 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] pants-yourmove.livejournal.com
I know the feeling.

Maybe when this is done we won't have to go home, we'll get to go somewhere else.

Date: 2011-08-03 03:27 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nosoul-nomind.livejournal.com
[She stops working a moment to think on that, before looking at Aaron, blinking. She seriously hasn't thought about going somewhere else other than home. She hadn't considered it an option.]

... Do you really think that's possible?

Date: 2011-08-03 10:28 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] pants-yourmove.livejournal.com
I hope so. I mean, if they can take people from any world maybe they can send people to any world.

If we win, we'll be able to control that.

Date: 2011-08-04 12:21 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nosoul-nomind.livejournal.com
Or so we think. But it's as good a plan as any, I guess.

Date: 2011-08-04 12:34 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] pants-yourmove.livejournal.com
Yeah, not like we actually know that much.

But we have to have some goal and not everyone is going to be behind the idea of going back home.

Date: 2011-08-04 01:14 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nosoul-nomind.livejournal.com
Yeah. Like me. So if it's an option, I'm all for it.

Date: 2011-08-04 02:47 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] pants-yourmove.livejournal.com
This place is a chance to be new people, and then maybe give us a new future.

Date: 2011-08-04 04:30 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nosoul-nomind.livejournal.com
Now if there was a way to make sure this happens.

Date: 2011-08-05 04:53 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] pants-yourmove.livejournal.com
If there is, we'll find it.
